01 / OUR STORY

The luxury of
an ordinary day.

A quiet sea. Light moving across the tatami. Something good to eat, and time to enjoy it. Shimanami Retreat is an invitation to slow down and discover the everyday pleasures of life on a Japanese island.

Make room in your journey for a different rhythm.

02 / STAY

A Japanese home.
A warm welcome.

Stay in traditional tatami rooms in a renovated Japanese house, with one guest party welcomed each day. Your host family lives in the same building: a chance to experience a home as it is lived in.

  • Tatami rooms & futon bedding
  • Private guest rooms, washbasin area & engawa veranda
  • Shared bathroom & toilet with the host family

If you prefer not to use the shared bathroom, we're happy to recommend nearby public hot spring baths (onsen).

Before You Stay

Your host family lives in the same building, including young children. You will hear the sounds of everyday family life — voices, footsteps, and the lively moments before the children go to bed.

Unlike a quiet hotel, this is a real family home. We warmly welcome guests who appreciate the warmth and energy of a Japanese family household as part of their island experience.

07 / YOUR HOST

Hello, I’m Yuri.

I moved from Tokyo to this island to care for my family. Over time, I came to appreciate the simple beauty of everyday island life and wanted to share it with visitors.

Before moving to the island, I spent over 20 years as a clinical dietitian at a key regional acute-care hospital in central Tokyo, working closely with patients. My professional experience also includes numerous academic conference presentations, research publications in medical journals, and contributions to medical textbooks.

Today, I bring my professional experience and passion for food into a new chapter of life — sharing Japanese home cooking, seasonal ingredients, and the everyday pleasures of island living with guests.
